As the election season approaches for local, state, and federal elections, the City of Hastings
would like to provide candidates and their supporters with information on regulations for signs
that are customarily used for political campaigns.

Common examples of temporary signs include the following, event banners, political signs and
18-inch by 24-inch poster signs. As a reminder, these signs are exempt from sign-permit
requirements if they are 5 square feet or under.

The City of Hastings regulates signs, including temporary signs, which are typically used for
political campaigns. The purpose of the regulations is to maintain safety for pedestrians,
bicyclists, and motorists, and to preserve the character and integrity of neighborhoods,
commercial areas, and roadways. The complete regulations can be found in the City’s Code of
Ordinances in Section 54-401.

Here is a summary of the applicable regulations for temporary signs:
 All sign(s) shall remain on private property. The Adams County and City of Hastings
online mapping site can be used to generally determine the line between private
property and public right-of-way (https://gis.adamscounty.org/map).
 All sign(s) cannot obstruct the vision clearance zone, as defined by the City Code of
Ordinance Section 54-406 (B0).
 Poster signs exceeding 5 square feet require a sign permit which will be valid for 6
months.
 Please note that the signs listed in Section 54-406 (B)12 are prohibited in all zoning
districts in the City of Hastings.

Thank you to candidates and their supporters for adhering to these regulations. Please feel free
to contact Development Services Director Kevin Kubo at 402-461-2368 or by email at
[email protected] if you have any questions.
