NDOT to Host Pre-Construction Public Open House April 2 for Improvements in Red Cloud

March 19, 2026 (Grand Island, Neb.) — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is holding a public open house about upcoming construction and impacts to traffic flow on U.S. Highway 281 (US-281) and U.S. Highway 136 (US-136) in Red Cloud.

Identified as In Red Cloud, the project will reconstruct approximately one mile of US-281 between approximately 1st and 11th avenues, as well as about a quarter mile of US-136 between Cedar and Locust streets. Improvements include new pavement, sidewalks and curb ramps, street lighting and a storm sewer, as well as utility improvements.

Construction is set to begin on April 6, and this open house is being held to share information about construction phasing and how the project may temporarily impact drivers, pedestrians and cyclists in the area. Detour routes, temporary lane closures, and other information will also be shared. There will not be a formal presentation, and attendees may come and go at their convenience during the scheduled hours.

 NDOT staff will be available to answer questions.
