On March 9, at approximately 9:03 p.m., deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Interstate 80 near mile marker 351 after York County 911 received an automated iPhone crash detection alert.

Shortly after the initial alert, York County 911 received a second call from a passing motorist, who reported seeing a white pickup truck that appeared to have struck the cable barrier in the median. Using GPS data from the calls, dispatchers determined the vehicle had continued eastbound on Interstate 80 and was later located at the Petro Travel Center.

Deputies responded to the Petro Travel Center and made contact with Gabriel Gonzalez, age 23 of Lake Forest, California, who identified himself as the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash. Gabriel was accompanied by a passenger who sustained injuries as a result of the collision.

During the investigation, deputies observed signs of alcohol impairment from Gonzalez. He admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages prior to the crash. A preliminary breath test later indicated a breath alcohol concentration above 0.15.

Deputies determined the vehicle had left the roadway on Interstate 80, struck the cable barrier in the median, and then re-entered the roadway before traveling approximately two miles to the York interchange. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and lost a front tire during the crash. Evidence from the scene, including tire marks and roadway damage, confirmed the vehicle continued traveling on the rim until reaching the Petro Travel Center.

The passenger was evaluated on scene by York Fire & Rescue and was later transported to York General Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Gonzalez was arrested and lodged at York County Corrections on the charges of Leaving the Scene of an Injury Accident, DUI, 2nd Offense, Aggravated, and Open Container.

The York County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists that driving under the influence remains a leading factor in serious crashes and urges all drivers to plan for a sober ride.
