Ag Day Set for Tuesday

(Grand Island, NE) – The Hall County Agricultural Committee will be sponsoring Ag Day on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Fonner Park in the Sheep Barn and Five Points Livestock Arena from 8:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.  Listen to an interview with Ag Day Chair Annette Schimmer at the bottom of the page.

Each spring the Hall County Agricultural Committee, in conjunction with Fonner Park and area agricultural producers, hosts an Ag Day for fourth grade Grand Island students and surrounding areas. Ag Day provides students the opportunity to observe and interact with several different aspects of agriculture.

This year the Ag Committee is expecting 711 students coming from 15 different schools from the Grand Island area. Now in its Twenty-second year, Ag Day is an established educational event with presenting representatives from the Nebraska Cattle Women, Grand Island Northwest High School FFA, NebraskaPork Producers, Central Platte Natural Resources District, 4-H/UNL Extension Hall County, Embryology, Midwest Dairy Association, UNL Department of Entomology and Nebraska Corn Board. The students will get hands-on experience at the booths and will see several farm animals brought in by area farmers. The students will also observe live demonstrations from a horse trainer, horse farrier, and a sheep shearer.

According to Annette Schimmer, Ag Day Chair, “Because the agricultural community is one of the most significant economic drivers in this area, the Agricultural Committee works to ensure that the youth of the community are familiar with the agricultural economy and the impact it has on the Grand Island/Hall County area.” 

About the Hall County Agricultural Committee
On January 1, 2020, the Hall County Agricultural Committee was formed as a sub-committee under the Hall County Agricultural Society. The Agricultural Committee focuses on educating and promoting the economic impact agriculture has on our community and supporting area producers. They host Ag Day to Grand Island area schools 4th grade students by educating our youth and teaching them about the importance that agriculture plays in our daily lives. The Committee also supports our area producers and hosts an annual Ag Appreciation event. They provide a hands-on event called Little Feet on the Farm at the Hall County Fair, and recently added a Feed the Farmers event during grain harvest in the fall. In addition, the committee provides two $500 scholarships for Hall County students pursuing a post-secondary education in various areas of agriculture.
