Radon Test Kits Available

Grand Island, NE – During the month of January, CDHD is highlighting National Radon Action Month by offering free Radon test kits to everyone in the Central District. The goal of this effort is to reduce exposure to Radon in Hall, Hamilton, and Merrick Counties.

The test kits are distributed state-wide through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Health Departments across the country are observing National Radon Action Month to bring attention to this issue that can have serious health consequences.

Facts about Radon:
•Radon has no smell or taste but is present in some homes.
•Radon comes from the natural decay of uranium found in nearly all soil. It moves up through the ground and into homes through cracks in the foundation.
•Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, behind smoking. The EPA estimates nearly 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year is due to Radon.
•According to the Environmental Protection Agency, nearly half of all Nebraska counties have a high potential for high indoor Radon levels.
•The only way to know the Radon levels in your home is to test for it.

Tests are placed in the lowest level of your home for 3-7 days and are then mailed off for analysis. The tests include postage paid envelopes, a free lab analysis and short-term detectors. If you are shown to have high levels of Radon in your home, the analysis will also come with recommendations on how to reduce your exposure.

Kits can be picked up free of charge at CDHD, 1137 South Locust Street in Grand Island from 8 am – 5 pm Mondays – Thursdays and 8 am – 4:30 pm on Fridays. For more information log onto www.cdhd.ne.gov or call (308) 385-5175.
