Northwest Softball Picks Up Two More Wins Saturday

(Hastings, NE) - It was back to Hastings for the Northwest softball team on Saturday as the Vikings would make a return trip to the Bill Smith Softball Complex after winning two games on Thursday to open up the season by defeating Gering and Hastings. On Saturday, the Vikings would first defeat Omaha Skutt Catholic with a final score of 19-6. The black and gold would come out and blast four home runs right out of the gate in the top of the first inning. Laiken Dorsey would have a grand slam, Jolie O'Hara would launch a 3-run shot, Ryese Zobel added a two-run home run, and lastly, Becca Dinkelman would tack on a solo home run. In the top of the third inning, Northwest added another home run in the game as it would be the second of the day from first basemen Laiken Dorsey. In the contest, Northwest would have 19 runs on 20 hits. Libby Loman would get the win in the circle going four innings, giving up 7 hits, 6 runs, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts, on 72 pitches.

A much different story in the second game of the day as Northwest would defeat Beatrice by a final score of 12-6. The contest was over three hours long and felt like a high-pressure state tournament game. The game would be scoreless through the first two innings. Northwest would then bust things open with six runs in the top of the third. Beatrice would answer with two runs to make it 6-2 Northwest through three innings. The Vikings would add 2 runs in the fourth, 3 more in the fifth, and one insurance run in the seventh inning. Beatrice made some noise in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring 4 runs. Northwest would have 12 runs on 12 this. The Vikings would use two pitchers starting with Graclyn Simmons, then later bringing in Libby Loman for two innings. Simmons would come back in and close the game out. Simmons in five and two-thirds gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, 6 walks, and had 9 strikeouts on 133 pitches. Loman tossed 51 pitches giving up five hits, three runs, 2 walks, and 1 strikeout.

Northwest is now 4-0 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday, August 27th hosting Hastings St Cecilia at the Veterans Complex with a first pitch at 6:30 pm.
