Northwest Soccer: Girls Win, Boys Fall at Kearney Catholic

(Kearney, NE) - The Northwest soccer teams made the short trip to Kearney Catholic on Tuesday night to take on the Stars. It was the start of a busy week for Northwest with matches on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. 

In the boys' match, Kearney Catholic would win 2-1 after a shootout decided the Stars as the victors. The Vikings and Stars would be scoreless after the first half. Things would pick up in the second half as Kearney Catholic would take a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 55th minute. The Vikings would then tie it 1-1 in the 63rd minute as Khale Lindiman would score off a Xavier Corona corner kick. The match would remain scoreless for the rest of the second half, forcing the two overtime periods. After both teams came up empty, it was off to a shootout where Kearney Catholic would outscore Northwest 5-4. It would be the second straight shootout for Northwest to start the season, as the Vikings would fall to Norris last Friday by a final score of 2-1. 

In the girls' match, Northwest would run away with the victory 6-0. The Vikings would hold a 2-0 lead at the half, getting two goals from senior Lupe Sanchez. The Vikings would tack on four more goals in the second half, getting a goal from Evelyn Poland, Evie Keller, and two more added from Lupe Sanchez. The Vikings going into Tuesday night were coming off a season-opening win last Thursday, winning 2-1 in the shootout at Norris vs the Titans. 

The Northwest boys (0-2) and Vikings girls (2-0) will host Lakeview on Thursday, March 27th, with the girls match at 5:30 pm and the boys to follow at 7:00 pm. On the schedule after Thursday, Northwest is set to host Scottsbluff on Saturday, March 29th.
