Hoyas Too Much For Creighton Men In League Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown used a 38-13 run spanning halftime to hand Creighton an 81-57 loss at Georgetown on Wednesday night in the nation's capital in the BIG EAST opener for both squads.

Georgetown improved to 9-2 on the season (1-0 BIG EAST), matching its win total in 32 contests from a year ago. Creighton dropped to 7-5.

Georgetown got baskets from Caleb Williams, Micah Peavy and Curtis Williams Jr. during a 7-0 run in a span of 49 seconds to take a 21-15 lead and force a Bluejay timeout. CU trailed 25-18 and held the Hoyas scoreless for more than 5:30 of game time, but could only score twice itself in that span to narrow the gap to 25-23.  A three-ball, followed by a driving lay-up, by Jackson McAndrew, helped CU regain a 28-26 lead, its first advantage since it was ahead 14-13. GU answered with the final eight points of the half after three-pointers by Curtis Williams Jr. and Jordan Burks, as well as a putback by Caleb Williams to take a 34-28 lead into the break.

Creighton had just three men score in the first 20 minutes, getting 12 points by Steven Ashworth, 10 from McAndrew and six by Kalkbrenner. GU was led by eight points each from Thomas Sorber and Williams and owned an 11-0 advantage in bench points.

The Hoyas started the second half making eight of its first 11 shots, compiling a 22-10 run to extend its lead to 56-38 and were never threatened after that.

The Hoyas were paced by 21 from Epps, 20 by Peavy and 12 from Curtis Williams Jr. Peavy also had eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. GU shot 10-for-16 from three-point range and won the rebound battle, 39-25. The Hoyas outscored CU 20-7 off turnovers and 32-16 in the paint, including seven dunks after the break.

Creighton had three men in double-figures, Ashworth (21), McAndrew (13) and Kalkbrenner (10). The Bluejays made 12 three-pointers, but needed 33 attempts.

Creighton is back at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Villanova (8-4, 1-0 BIG EAST).
