GICC Volleyball Season Preview

(Grand Island, NE) - The 2024 season for the GICC volleyball team will start a new era at the head coaching helm. Taking over for 49-year head coach Sharon Zavala will be Trey and Tina Salinas, who were officially introduced back in February. Zavala stepped away from the Crusaders after 1,177 wins (state record) and had just 220 losses, 11 state titles, nine runner-up finishes, and overall made the state tournament 35 times.

Trey Salinas has plenty of experience at the college and high school levels. Salinas was the head coach at the University of Illinois-Springfield and also an associate and assistant coach at Belmont Abbey College, and Metro State University in Denver. While also in Denver Salinas coached the boy's volleyball team at Bishop Machebeuf High School. Trey's wife, Tina, who will be an associate head coach is an Ord native who played volleyball at Hastings College.

The Crusaders a season ago went 27-4 making it to the state tournament only to fall in the first round to Minden 3-0.

GCC's top returner will be Maggie Herbeck (JR) who had 280 kills a season ago for the Crusaders. Also back for GICC is Grace Johnson (JR) who played in 82 sets last season.
