Creighton Women Pick Up Road Win At Providence
Providence, R. I. -- A near flawless third quarter performance that saw Creighton outscore Providence 23-2 boosted Bluejay Women's Basketball to a 60-46 win over the Friars on Saturday, January 4.
The win lifted Creighton to 12-3 on the season and 4-0 in BIG EAST action, while Providence fell to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Trailing 26-23 at the break, the Bluejays flipped the game with a 15-0 run to start the second half. Senior Morgan Maly scored seven of her game-high 14 points in the run, while seniors Lauren Jensen and Molly Mogensen each contributed four points. After Providence broke the streak with a bucket at the 3:49 mark, Creighton rattled off the final eight points of the frame to take 46-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter the Bluejays extended their lead to as much as 21 points (54-33) with just over five minutes remaining and coasted to the 60-46 victory.
A defensive battle throughout saw junior Kiani Lockett key Creighton's offense in the opening frame with six points in the stanza. On the final possession of the first quarter senior Morgan Maly connected on an NBA range three-pointer to put the Bluejays up 13-8.
Providence's stifling defense frustrated the Bluejays during the second quarter, allowing the Friars to use a 10-0 run to take the lead with a 10-0 run and held the edge into halftime 26-23. Creighton went just 3-for-18 (16.7%) during the second period.
Maly's 14 points led all scorers, while Jensen finished with 10 points. Providence got a team-high eight points from Grace Efosa in the loss.
The Bluejays return to court on Wednesday, January 8 as the Bluejays and take on Marquette in D.J. Sokol Arena at 6:00 p.m.
