Chief Deputy Dan Schleusener Announces Candidacy for Buffalo County Sheriff

Kearney, NE — Dan Schleusener, the current Chief Deputy Sheriff for the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, has announced his intent to file as a Republican candidate for Buffalo County Sheriff in the May 2026 Primary Election. His announcement follows Sheriff Neil Miller’s decision to retire at the end of his current term. A 24-year veteran of public safety, Schleusener has dedicated his career to law enforcement — including the past 18 years serving the citizens of Buffalo County.

“I am honored to have worked alongside Sheriff Miller as his Chief Deputy,” Schleusener said. “I am even more honored to have earned his trust and endorsement to continue leading the Sheriff’s Office into the future.”

If elected, Schleusener plans to focus on strengthening community partnerships throughout Buffalo County by expanding engagement between the Sheriff’s Office and all communities in the county. His priorities include maintaining the highest standards of professional law enforcement, recruiting and retaining outstanding employees, and deepening collaboration with the Kearney Police Department through shared resources and joint initiatives.

“I look forward to visiting with citizens across Buffalo County over the next year to discuss my vision for the Sheriff’s Office and to listen to the priorities of the people we serve,” Schleusener said.

Schleusener has been endorsed by Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers, Sheriff Neil Miller, former Kearney Police Chief Bryan Waugh, former state senator John Lowe, Sherry Morrow and Dan Lynch.
