(Grand Island, NE) - The 2022 fall sports season is quickly approaching for athletes across the state of Nebraska. Once again this season the KRGI Sports Network will have coverage of select volleyball & softball games along with the entire football season on 2DAYFM 103.1. Online at along with the 2DAYFM mobile app. An entire broadcast schedule can be found on the sports tab on our website.

Northwest football is coming off a 5-5 season last year falling in the first round of the Class B state playoffs at Waverly 59-13. The five wins for the Vikings last year included Hastings, York, Seward, Gering, and Alliance. The Vikings this season start off with a short road trip to Aurora on August 26th. Kevin Stein gets set for his 13th season at the helm of the Northwest ship. Matt Williams caught up with the head coach to talk about last season and what's to expect this season. Special note to mention for Northwest football when the first two home games arrive for the Vikings as they will not be playing at Viking field as construction continues on the turf & lights project. On September 9th Northwest will play Seward at 7:00 pm at Hastings College. The next home game will be played at Grand Island's Memorial Stadium on September 16th vs Elkhorn North. Kick-off time at this time has yet to be determined.

When it comes to Northwest volleyball it will be the question for even the 2022 season. Can the "Streak" continue? The Vikings who have been to the state volleyball tournament 21 straight seasons will be vying for trip number 22 come November with several key pieces back for soon-to-be 5th-year head coach Lindsey Harders. Last year the Vikings ended the season with a three-set loss to Waverly in the opening round of the Class B state tournament and finished with a record of 24-12. The Vikings will open up the season hosting in-town rival Grand Island Central Catholic on Thursday, August 25th, and then follow up with two Saturday matches on August 27th vs Gretna and Malcolm at the Nebraska State Fair during the Bill Marshall Classic.

Northwest softball will have plenty to play for again this season when it kicks off the year Thursday, August 18th at Hastings. The Vikings finished third at the state tournament a year ago, which was the highest spot for a Northwest softball team in school history ending the season with a record of 27-9. When it comes to 2022 the Vikes will be looking for even a little more than a year ago with a loaded and talented roster including several key returners. Pitchers Ava Laurent and Kylie Caspersen are both back for head coach Mitch Sadd along with experienced players Maddy Cushing, Kam Mings, Avyn Urbanski, Grace Baasch, Kyra Ray, and Talia Bandt. By far the most powerful hitter on the squad is back, and to mention only a sophomore, Reyse Zobel who saw a considerable amount of time for the Vikings especially late in the season a year ago. The contest on Thursday night August 18th can be heard live on 2DAYFM 103.1 and with the first pitch at approximately 6:30 pm. Below listen to a season preview with head coach Mitch Sadd.
