Grand Island Public Library Director Announces New Strategic Plan

Grand Island Public Library

Grand Island, Neb. — Celine Swan, director of Grand Island Public Library, has
announced the release of a new five-year strategic plan, which highlights the Library’s
core purpose, vision, and focus for continued growth and success in serving Hall
County. It also focuses on ways to meet and exceed the expectations of today’s Library
The GIPL Strategic Plan was the result of months-long planning among the Library’s
board of trustees, leadership team, employees, and community members who
discussed, developed, and defined why the Library serves the community, what it
values, and how it will act to fulfill its objectives in the years ahead. Of particular
importance to the Plan was assessing the results of the public written survey and
community conversations. Feedback from the community was critical.
“Despite an intensely challenging time for Grand Island Public Library since the
beginning of the Pandemic,” said Swan, “I’m pleased with how our team worked under
trying circumstances to engage with our patrons, to deepen our commitment to lifelong
learning with a particular emphasis on reaching out to the underserved and under-
represented, and using technology to deepen both self- and community development.”
“We took into account the changing world around us, how the pandemic affected our
community,” she continued. “We are committed to providing a personal touch and
delivering collections, services, and expertise. We are also committed to creating a
living and learning environment that is truly transformative, safe, and welcoming for all.
As the world turns, we remain agile, approachable, and resilient.”
Also, the Library Board voted to approve a new mission statement that best defines the
Library’s vision for its present and future: “To inspire and strengthen our community by
connecting people with information, ideas, and experiences.”

The Library identified six community-driven purposes that will sustain its collections
development, programming, space use, community partnerships, patron services, and
more. The Library aims to:
 Create a Library for Everyone
 Create a Culture of Excellence
 Develop and Maintain Mutually Beneficial Partnerships and Collaborations
 Generate Increased Awareness of All We Do and Offer
 Ensure the Library’s Materials, Programs, Technology, and Services Meet the
Needs of the Community
 Ensure the Library’s Physical Space Meets the Needs of the Community
“With the plan in place, we will continue and expand the work we do to inspire staff and
patrons and provide the tools and resources they need to thrive.” said Tanya Hansen,
Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and President of the Library’s Board of
Trustees. “I believe our trustees, the Library director, and the staff intend that the real
beneficiaries of our efforts are the people of our community who look to the Library for
information, learning, and enjoyment.”
