Custer Avenue Paving Improvement Project

Front of the Grand Island City hall building.

The City of Grand Island Public Works Department is announcing the Custer Avenue Paving Improvement Project will continue on May 25, 2023.

Custer Avenue southbound lane is scheduled to be closed on Thursday, May 25, 2023 from 13th Street to State Street.

Custer Avenue northbound lane will remain open through the project corridor for access to adjacent properties.

A detour route will be provided on 13th Street, Webb Road and State Street to reduce traffic through the construction zone. Custer Avenue intersections at 13th Street and State Street will remain open to east/west traffic for this project phase.

No parking will be allowed on Custer Avenue through the construction zone. This phase of Custer Avenue is tentatively planned to be closed until July 2023. The Custer Avenue project includes reconstruction from 13th Street to State Street.

The project will include reconstruction of the center 40’ of the concrete roadway. A 30” curb and gutter section will remain on both the east and west side.

Sidewalk and driveways will remain in place. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be replaced at select locations.

This project will focus on the pavement reconstruction, and no improvements to the underground utilities or storm sewer are
anticipated.

On January 24, 2023, City Council awarded the construction contract of Custer Avenue – 13th Street to State Street (Phase III) to Diamond Engineering Company of Grand Island, Nebraska for $1,109,367.45.
